A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these drugs should be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections explains the amplified regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
